Signature Background Remover — Extract a Clean Signature, Free & Private

Extracting an authentic handwritten signature from a paper photograph or document scan is a frequent necessity for signing PDF contracts, digital onboarding agreements, legal forms, and invoice approvals. Ordinary camera photos of signatures on paper suffer from shadows, uneven ambient lighting, and yellowish paper tint that make direct overlays look messy and unprofessional. This 100% in-browser utility applies 90° rotation, automatic paper-edge leveling, proportional and freeform cropping, Otsu binarization, and edge-preserving mathematical morphology to isolate pen strokes cleanly onto a transparent background at true 300 DPI resolution.

1. Digital PDF & Document Signing Overlays

When inserting a signature into Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word, DocuSign, or Google Docs, a solid paper background covers existing document lines and text. By exporting as a Transparent PNG, only the pen ink pixels remain visible, allowing your handwritten signature to float seamlessly over signature lines without any unsightly white rectangular box.

2. Pure White Background for Print & Photocopy

If your scanned signature is intended for physical printing on official forms or identification cards, our Pure White JPG Mode replaces off-white paper grain, yellow desk lighting, and shadow gradients with pure RGB (255, 255, 255) white. This prevents office printers from wasting ink on background paper texture.

100% Client-Side Privacy Guarantee

Your handwritten signature is your legal identity and must never be exposed to unknown third-party servers. Unlike commercial cloud file converters that upload your signature images to remote web servers, this application executes 100% inside your local device's web browser using native HTML5 Canvas and WebAssembly. Your signature photo never traverses the internet, ensuring complete confidentiality.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How should I photograph my handwritten signature for best results?

Sign on clean, unlined white printer paper using a dark blue or black gel pen, rollerball, or felt-tip marker. Place the paper under bright, diffuse lighting (avoiding your phone's cast shadow directly over the writing), and snap a straight-on photo from 12 to 18 inches away without using the camera flash.

How do I rotate by 90° or level tilted paper edges?

In Tab 1 ("Crop & Straighten"), click Rotate 90° to quickly rotate sideways photos into upright reading orientation, or click Auto-Straighten to let our boundary detection algorithm level the paper orientation automatically. You can also fine-tune with the -45° to +45° rotation slider.

How do I lock proportional crop dimensions vs. freeform cropping?

Typing values into the Width and Height boxes automatically locks the aspect ratio to that proportion. Dragging any handle will scale the box proportionally without distorting the ratio. You can click the Lock / Unlock button at any time to toggle between proportional locking and freeform cropping.

What is Otsu's thresholding and how does it separate ink from paper?

Otsu's algorithm analyzes the grayscale luminance histogram of your photograph to automatically find the optimal threshold that minimizes intra-class variance between the dark ink pixels and the lighter paper background pixels. This eliminates the need for manual trial-and-error guesswork while adapting to varying camera exposure levels.

How do I make faint or thin ballpoint pen strokes bolder?

Switch to the Refine tab and increase the Ink Thickness (Dilation) slider (in 0.5 decimal steps up to +10.0). This applies a mathematical dilation filter to expand stroke edges uniformly, making delicate or faint pen pressure look crisp and solid.

Can I preserve blue ink or change my signature to black?

Yes. The tool automatically detects whether your signature was written in blue or black ink and enhances the hue. If you want to force your blue pen signature into formal legal black ink (or vice-versa), toggle Manual Override in the Refine tab and select your preferred color mode.
